LUMBERTON — A 25-year-old woman died in a single-car accident when her car ran off the road Sunday night and plunged into a creek that is part of Big Swamp, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Yessica Rodriguez, 25, 4635 River Road, White Oak, was traveling north on Tar Heel Road just east of Lumberton at about 11:30 p.m. when her 2002 Pontiac passenger car exited the road to the right just before a bridge near the Bladen County line, according to the report by Trooper R.R. Dial. The vehicle missed the bridge and plunged into the river.
Charles Britt, director of Robeson County Emergency Services, said that the initial 911 call to the Sheriff’s Office was about a missing person. He said when it was discovered that there was an accident, there was confusion about whether it was in Bladen County or Robeson County as no location was provided. The Robesonian listened to the 911 cal, and there were efforts by the state Highway Patrol to find an accident site between Littlefield Mobile Home Park and Tar Heel. By the time rescuers reached the crash site, it was too late to save Rodriguez, according to Britt.
According to the report, Rodriguez was driving the posted speed limit of 55 mph, but the road was wet from rain that day.
Damage to the 2002 Pontiac, registered to Jorge Rodriguez of 1733 Wellons Drive, Fayetteville, was estimated at $3,500.
