WASHINGTON — Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Obama pledged to put his “full weight” behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence.

Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association’s proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments Saturday in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.

“It is not enough for us to say, ‘This is too hard so we’re not going to try,’” Obama said.

“I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can’t have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids,” he said. “And, yes, it’s going to be hard.”

The president added that he’s ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.

The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.

The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.

Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. “I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools,” he said. “And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem.”

The president said he intends to press the issue with the public.

“The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away,” Obama said. “It certainly won’t feel like that to me. This is something that — you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it’s not something that I want to see repeated.”

Separately, a member of the president’s cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. “I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation,” Vilsack said on CNN.

Vilsack said he thinks it’s possible for Americans to come together. “It’s potentially a unifying conversation,” he said. “The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified.”

Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.

In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

Hagel supported the 2002 resolution approving U.S. military action in Iraq, but later became a critic of the war. He has been denounced by some conservatives for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship.

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a “patriot.”

Hagel “served this country with valor in Vietnam,” the president said. “And (he) is somebody who’s currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job.”

Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

You all whom have said that teachers should be armed are all stupid. Have you seem some of these teachers? Many of them I would not trust with a potato gun but you would like to put deadly weapons in their hands? What if a teacher gets mad with another teacher, they look down and notice that they have a gun and decide to shoot the other teacher.

Some of you people need to quit watching so much Hannity and learn to form your own opinions.

Unlike you, I trust law abiding Americans to make civilized choices and decisions based on morals and rule of law. You democrats think the American people are stupid. This is why your democrat leaders think they must TELL you what to think, how to act and, provide for you from cradle to grave.....

Why don't you try and put a little faith in your fellow man and stop trying to be "nanny" to them. Again, law abiding citizens only. Also keep the mentally retarted put away in an asylum or something.

Tps, you like for other people to TELL you what to do and when to do it don't you? You think it's great they TELL you to wear a seatbelt, you think it's great they TELL you to buy health insurance, you like it when they TELL us we have to wear a helmet, etc.... Well you live your life like a child and I'll live mine like an adult.. And I don't like another grown person TELLING me what to do, as long as it's not endangering other people, get it? I'm an adult, you may want to give it a try.

Also Obama's kids school has armed teachers and gaurds for protection, you may think his kids are better than yours, but I don't.........

PS. As a matter of fact, I say run back ground checks on all the kids parents around here. The ones who are "clean" and have a history of at least 2 years hunting with "dad" in the woods, allow that kid to bring in his gun. Only the ones who are proficient in the sport of game hunting, these are good kids and know how to use a gun... Safety first! When is the last time around here you heard of a teen killing another teen from anger or revenge while on a hunting trip?

Ross, you don't practice what you preach. I am sure you voted for the gay marriage ban so "government" can tell us whether gays can marry or not. I am an American, not a democrat or republican. You are so brainwashed it's funny

Tps, God doesn't allow gays to marry, and if I don't do as he commands, I sin.

Gays can shack all they want. God puts men and women together, he would never put 2 men or 2 women together, therfore they can't get married. I'm not TELLING them what they can and can't do, God is.

Freedom, gotta love it.

Ross, thanks for dodging the question as usual. It's simple, did you vote or not?

Of course gays should not marry. It's also funny to see you talk about the bible. You are the last person I would associate with the bible or anything faith based.

If he keeps this promise...in spite of a document we call the Constitution, and Bill of Rights...it will be the first promise he has made that he actually will keep. He, like all other liberals, see a crime free, murder freee society if he disarms the good guys..and also thinks that the bad guys will all of a sudden become law abiding , and turn in their weapons. Americans asked for 4 more years of this...and I'm afraid none of us, including the liberals, will be happy with what the next 4 years will bring..unless Congress gets some horse sense. And that probably won't happen. They are a big part of the problem...

How can anyone take anything this guy says seriously? Not only is he a known liar, he says stupid stuff like, “I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools,” he said. “And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem.” Hey, putting gun-free zone signs all over the school didn't work. Having unarmed teachers lunge at the killer didn't work. Putting armed guards in schools or arming teachers is worth a try. Cowards like the punk in CT aren't looking for a shootout. That's why they go to gun-free zones for their killing sprees and immediately kill themselves as soon as someone with a gun shows up.

No one has the right to kill innocent people at any given time or place on this earth, but OBAMA has several guards with guns that protect his family, I should have the same right to own a gun and protect my goodies I worked for 43 years.
