Dymaggio Alexander Gilchrist, 18, of 301 Gilchrist Road in Marietta, is charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving in the July 2012 accident that killed Nokolma Dakota Hunt, 18, of 1716 N.C. 904, Fairmont, and Tyreke Dashon Addison, 18, of 1102 E. Eighth St., Lumberton. Gilchrist, who just finished his freshman year playing football for a university in Ohio, was arrested on Monday and bond was set at $30,000.
Gilchrist and two other passengers in the vehicle, Devont’e Shaquan Govan, 17, of 142 Leroy Road, Marietta, and Darius Justin McCallum, 18, of 6175 Wiregrass Road, Orrum, were also injured in the accident, but have recovered.
According to an initial investigation by Trooper David Raynor of the state Highway Patrol, Gilchrist was driving a 1994 Ford on N.C. 41 just south of Fairmont at 7:32 p.m. on July 9 when it left left the roadway to the right and traveled 109 feet before striking a tree.
According to Hackney, his investigation showed that Gilchrist was “play acting” while driving down the highway just before the accident, dropping his head and closing his eyes several times while the car was traveling at approximately 55 mph. In addition, a video that was made 90 minutes before the deadly accident by one of the occupants was recovered by the District Attorney’s Office and depicts those involved, including Gilchrist, smoking marijuana. Hackney said a blood test confirmed that Gilchrist had marijuana in his system.
Gilchrist saw limited action as an outside linebacker for Malone University in Canton, Ohio, during the recently completed football season. As a senior at Fairmont High in 2011, Gilchrist was named the county’s Player of the Year after compiling 28 touchdowns and rushing for 1,228 yards. He also started at free safety and led the team in interceptions.
Addison,a wide receiver and running back, was a two-time all-county selection by The Robesonian and paired with Hunt, a tailback, led the Golden Tornadoes to conference championships in 2010 and 2011. Addison also played on the varsity basketball team and was the starting center-fielder on the baseball team. Hunt was a utility player on Fairmont’s baseball team.
