Two people were killed in separate traffic accidents this weekend, including a St. Pauls man who died when his motorcycle struck a passenger car.
The second person was killed when his all-terrain vehicle wrecked.
According to a report by Trooper Robert Hunt of the state Highway Patrol, Ricky Charles Newman, 48, of 2572 Parkton Tobermory Road, died Saturday at 6:22 p.m. when his 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle struck a Pontiac passenger car about a mile west of Parkton.
Newman was traveling west when the driver of the Pontiac, Curtis Jones, 63, of 1516 Britt Road, St. Pauls, who was also traveling west, made a left turn into a private driveway, according to the report. Newman, who was attempting to pass the Pontiac, crashed the motorcycle into the driver’s side door of the Pontiac at an estimated 58 mph. Newman, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and died instantly.
The report said Newman was making a legal pass, and that charges are pending against Jones.
Jones and a passenger in his vehicle, Lola McArthur, 49, of 1185 Britt Road, St. Pauls, both suffered minor injuries, according to the report, and were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The report said the motorcycle received $12,000 worth of damage, and $6,000 worth of damage was done to the Pontiac.
In an unrelated incident, Regal Lee Hunt, 32, of 45 Rambo Drive, Lumberton, was killed at 5:33 p.m. on Sunday when his ATV crashed on private property about four miles south of Pembroke.
According to 1st Sgt. Ardeen Hunt of the Highway Patrol, Hunt was traveling west on a private road about a mile west of Union School Road when the 2012 Polaris he was driving exited the road to the right and struck trees. Hunt, who was not wearing a helmet, was killed immediately.
The report said $600 damage was done to the ATV.
