LUMBERTON — One lucky do-gooder will put the car in karma on Thursday during the seventh annual United Way Car Giveaway.

There are 19 finalists crossing their fingers that they will be the winner and drive away in either a new Chevrolet Spark, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris. The finalists were chosen during weekly drawings held at the participating dealerships — Fair Bluff Ford, Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Terry Chapin Nissan and Peterson Toyota.

Twenty finalists qualified for the event by being fair-share givers to United Way of Robeson County, meaning they donate the equivalent of at least one hour’s pay a month to the agency.

The finalists in the event, which will be held at 6 p.m. at Biggs Park Mall’s Center Court, are Laura Davis; Murray West; James Strickland; Trina Dixon; Rocky Locklear; Shirley Strickland; Rose Freeman; Susan Rozier; Teresa Tyler; Michael S. Terefenko; Carletta Dianne Prevatte; David Carroll; Deborah Council; Walter Whitted; Stephanie Chavis-Ballard; Kathryn Lawrence; Belinda Oxendine; Damien Ralston; and Debra Jackson. According to Sandra Oliver, executive director for the United Way, one finalist voluntarily dropped out after leaving her job to return to school.

“Fair-share givers are real important because the number of folks that pledged to give an hour’s pay per month continues to grow every year,” Oliver said. “We’re hoping it will keep on growing.”

The public is encouraged to attend the reverse raffle to see who is the last person standing. There will be prizes for those in attendance.

The United Way’s campaign goal is $715,000. That money is distributed to local agencies that provide human services.
