Staff report

RALEIGH — A 61-year-old Maxton man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after testimony that he distributed more than 400 pounds of cocaine, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Alex Michael Locklear, whose address was not provided, was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Thursday after he had pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 5 kilograms of cocaine and 28 grams or more of crack cocaine, according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Evidence presented at Thursday’s hearing showed that from at least 2005 until he was arrested on Aug. 3, 2012, he was responsible for distributing more than 400 pounds of cocaine. The statement called Locklear “a significant trafficker of cocaine.”

After Locklear is released, he will be on probation for five years.

The war on drugs is a waste of time and money.

I think you're exactly right. If drugs were legalized, crime would go down INSTANTLY. And the ones using all the drugs would very soon kill themselves overdosing. Win-win situation if you ask me.

After he is released? He is 61 and got 25 years he is going to die in prison. A death sentence would have been more humane.

Man, 25 years for drugs ? You people got your priorities all screwed up down here. I've been reading countless murder convictions getting anywheres from 8-20 years. WTF ???

That was my first thought...now look at it like this. How many robberies or murders are because of an addiction to cocaine? Take away the supply and force people to either clean up or find a new addiction (hopefully something more productive)

Drugs should be treated like alcohol and tobacco. Drunk driving aside, no one is killing anyone over beer or whiskey. No one is stealing money to pay for vodka. However, during prohibition, organized crime made millions killing and stealing in the name of "dealing" illegal alcohol.
