RED SPRINGS — A quiet Wednesday evening on a Robeson County road quickly plunged into chaos when two women were killed and two men seriously injured, local business owners say.

Clifford Williams Jr. was cutting hair at Red Barn Barbershop on N.C. 211 near Red Springs when a woman he’d never seen before ran into the business with “blood on her face and a gun in her hand” and called for help.

“She was screaming, ‘He’s killed everyone in the house,’” said Anthony Williams, Clifford’s brother and the shop’s co-owner.

The dead, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, are 59-year-old Kathy Bullard, who owned the home at 12156 N.C. 211 West, just one door down from the barbershop; and 55-year-old Donna Matteson, the mother of a Joseph Matteson, 31, whose 24-year-old wife Kendra was staying with Bullard following the couple’s break-up.

In a statement, Sealey said Joseph Matteson shot his mother, Bullard, and her son, 28-year-old Mark Anthony Bullard, stopping only when he ran out of ammunition. He then chased Kendra outside the home, where Mark Anthony Bullard and a family friend “took him down and a struggle ensued,” leaving Joseph Matteson with severe head injuries.

Randall Graham, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said that Joseph Matteson is on life support, “making questioning difficult.”

Williams said he and his brother followed Matteson out of the shop and when they got outside, they saw a man lying partially in the road and another standing over him, first kicking, and then pistol-whipping him. Williams said that people driving by were slowing down to look and to avoid the scene, leading two cars to collide.

“It was chaotic out here,” Williams said. “… It was shocking, something like this happening so close.”

According to Sealey, Kendra Matteson called the Sheriff’s Office from Bullard’s home at about 5:30 p.m. and said her husband was outside the home with a handgun and was threatening to kill her. She called back a few minutes later and said shots had been fired, he said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found Donna Matteson shot to death and lying in the front yard and Bullard lying dead inside the home, Sealey said. Joseph Matteson and Mark Anthony Bullard were each taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center by ambulance and later airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, Sealey said.

Sealey said a 9-year-old child was found inside a car outside of the home and a 1-year-old was inside the home in a crib. He said both children were Kendra’s. They were uninjured.

Sealey said that Kendra Matteson had “left” Joseph Matteson and their home at 2675 Calloway Road in Raeford, and had been staying with Kathy Bullard for a few days.

I find it completely heartless that a callous individual can make such crude comments about an event that they have absolutely no knowledge of. I've read all the articles pertaining to this tragedy and I can tell you that not one of them is 100% correct. There are numerous details that are inaccurate or just plain left out. These families are in great turmoil over what has happened. Ms. Kathy was a wonderful individual with an amazing heart and for someone to try and diminish the great deeds that she conducted by saying "I guess it pays not to get involved with domestic situations" is just pathetic. It takes a great heart to open your home to someone in need. Regardless if she would have opened her home to her or NOT, Ms. Kathy would STILL have been affected by this situation. It may not have turned out the same way...but she would have been affected. So, agreeing with Miss91, I am also deeply saddened by the loss of these two women but I am also extremely grateful that SOMEONE stuck up for Ms. Kendra! Lives have been loss, families have been hurt, but Ms. Kathy did NOT die for nothing! And she should be given EVERY credit for that.

Robesonian; Can you guys ban this person? One would think personal attacks would not be tolerated. The comments from this person are always personal and childish and add nothing to the debate.

DaveB ... You must never read Ross 's comments or your his friend... This is a comment section of the newspaper not a debate ... So you comment... Not debate ... Cause this is a newspaper and nobody can vote to see who wins ... So it's a comment section.. Ross turns it into a propaganda speech with his comments about race and pretty much everything else that includes non whites. I'm sure most people out there would agree with that... Sorry Bro

This is sad, everyone carrying guns aren't stable and/or responsible enough to have them. It's very seldom we see that the innocent one kills the intruder or attacker. People trying to help and end of victims because of stupidity. Then at the end of the day, he can't have the one he is killing for.

tellingit: You said "very seldom we see the innocent kill the intruder or attacker?" Stop listening to music radio all the time and pay attention and you would know that more robberies and murders, rapes and muggings are stopped because people own guns. Sometimes a rape is prevented without ever having to pull a gun, the rapist doesn't because he thinks "she may have a gun". Prevented!

So that being said and to use Obama's words, "Guns have created or saved more happy safe homes than you know about"...

Of course your left wing news and music stations wont tell you this, they wont even report that over 500 people were killed by guns in Chicago last year. Wonder why? I know why...

Such a shame, when this lady was being nice to let this woman who was obviously being abused by her husband come and live with her, and then her jealous husband came and beat and shot her son and killed her and her mother, now what was the sense of that, when all he wanted was his wife back and the kids. This lady Ms. Bullard was in the middle trying to help someone. I guess it pays not to get involved with domestic situations and let them try and work it out for themselves. Or she the young lady who left her husband should have gone to SSA and asked for housing or for money to get a hotel room for a couple of days to let him cool off. This is so bad. Such a waste of life! Someone must pay for this

You saying she should have stayed out of it doesn't know the story. My cousin didn't deserve to be treated that way. She sought out help because a child was involved. So before you start talking crap or saying ms. Bullard should've stayed out of it. She was helping family. yes it's a shame two innocent people lost there lives but I know she wouldn't have sat back and watch that ESP involving a child! I'm sad and as a loss of words for the loss of family members but I am also beyond glad my cousin and her 1 year old are safe.
