PEMBROKE —The Pembroke Rescue Squad has been awarded a $5,000 grant from CSX Railroad that will be used to update automated external defibrillators and cardiac monitors, according to a statement from Town Manager Oryan Lowery.

The CSX gift program focuses support on safety education, community safety and environmental education.

The squad will use the money to upgrade their existing AED and cardiac monitors. An AED is a machine that is used to shock and restart the heart of a patient in cardiac arrest.

“Our members work hard to help patients and save lives, I want to make sure that they have the equipment they need to do their job,” said Matthew Locklear, the squad’s commander. “CSX has been a long-time supporter of Pembroke Rescue and we thank them again for their assistance with this project.”
