PEMBROKE — Investigators say that a fire that destroyed an office at an apartment complex early Saturday morning was intentionally set.

According to Pembroke police Sgt. Ed Locklear, an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 of damage was done to the 270-square-foot rental office at Pembroke Square Apartments at 8393 Deep Branch Road. He said a vast amount of paperwork that was inside the office fueled the fire.

No one was injured in the fire.

According to Locklear, police received a call at 4:43 a.m. from a person who reported the fire. He said investigators determined that the fire had been caused by someone setting fire to straw that was outside the building.

“One side was completely engulfed and the fire ran right up to the roof,” Locklear said.

According to Locklear, a woman saw a man at the scene and described him as weighing about 160 pounds, wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Reece Oxendine at the Pembroke Police Department at 910-521-4333 or Lt. Brian Duckworth at the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3100.
