MAXTON — A Maxton man was shot and killed after he opened his door to help someone in need, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. A second person was also shot and wounded.

Willie Manning, 61, of 135 Stealth Drive, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to sheriff’s Capt. Anthony Thompson. He said deputies went to the home after receiving a call at 8:45 p.m. about “multiple people” being shot.

Daniel McLaughlin, 54, of the same address, suffered gunshot injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital where he received emergency surgery, according to Thompson.

Thompson said that the shooting happened after a man came to the home and asked for gasoline for his vehicle and was quickly followed by two more men.

The only description of the men was their race, but The Robesonian policy is not to include race unless it is one of several descriptive characteristics that could reasonably be assumed to lead to an identification and an arrest.

Never open the door after dark if you aren't expecting company. Stay locked and loaded, and stay safe.

Thank goodness we don't live somewhere that has restricted magazine size because as this incident shows, home invasions of occupied residences usually involve more than one intruder.

Ol stupid Joe Biden AKA obama's pick for V.P. said "if you are a woman, fire a shotgun away from the intruders(don't want to hurt em, just scare em) and pull the trigger a couple times in the air".... They should get scared and run away....

Yes, as always????.....The good ole RobCosonian will always print all the information about the victims!!!! Full name, address, age, where they work, what they drive, where they shop etc....Never understood that?????(Example) You got a woman robbed at knife point outside Wal-Mart.....You don't see any details about the robber.....But before you end the article, you know the victims life story????

BackatyaDD,

You would have to give me an example. There is no information about the victims here that would put them in jeopardy. We published the address b/c the shooting happened there. As a matter of routine we do not publish the exact address of alleged crime victims. This is the policy most newspapers use.

Why are we afraid to mention race? The people need to know what groups are committing these crimes more than others. People are keeping a running tab, and keeping it to themselves for safety.

If there were an alarming number of crimes being commited daily by left handed people, we'd want to know so we could keep an eye out for... you guessed it, left handed people...

ps. It does matter.

Let me help you Ross. While you would be concentrating on left handed people a right hand person would shoot you in the head because you are assuming that every left handed person is a killer. The problem isn't the persons left hand, but the character of the left handed person. Beware of everyone in your surrounding cause you never know when old righty is going to get you.

Never said I drop my gaurd on the right handed people, but as long as I know to avoid the lefties, I can give more attention if neccessary to the righties.

Reallyrob, think, you are blind and have a bag of apples, one is rotten. Now, you ask someone to help you pick it out of the bag, now you can eat the other apples. There may be another rotten one but, careful screening will help you avoid it. At least you got the one that YOU KNEW was rotten out with help, remember you are blind...

There are dangers around here, we need all the stats and help we can get to make informed decisions on who we allow in our comfort zone... Is it perfect, nope. But one makes decisions based on averages and stats, just like in baseball.

ps. Cover your eyes and ears and walk through this world smiling.

Very unusual I make a mistake like that, but oh well. Sorry to reallyrob, but you were probably agreeing with tellingit, so just scratch that apology.
