The show — which is based on 24 classic songs by Joel, including the song that inspired the musical’s title — was choreographed by Twyla Tharp. It is the story of lifelong friends who share their lives over two decades. Characters are taken directly from the lyrics in Joel’s songs like Brenda and Eddie from “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” and Sergeant O’Leary from “Movin’ Out.”
The story is told through dance and features no dialogue, but the theater won’t be silent. Joel’s songs are the inspiration and soundtrack for the show.
The Broadway production of “ Movin’ Out” played for three years and finally closed at the end of 2005 after 1,303 performances.
