FAIRMONT — A 20-year-old Rowland man has been charged with murder after the person he is accused of shooting Friday night died.

According to Fairmont Police Chief Danny Parker, Jahdarrius McNair, of 96 Rose Hill Road, Rowland, was charged with murder on Monday in the shooting death of 21-year-old Jeffery Collins, of 412 Meadowwood Circle, Fairmont.

McNair had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill before the charge was upgraded to murder.

According to Parker, Collins was among a group of people outside of unit 509 at McDaniel Street Apartments when shots were fired at 6:44 p.m. on Friday.

“There was a group of guys standing outside this apartment talking, and then all of sudden there were multiple shots fired,” Parker said. “They scattered, some ran inside apartment, some ran behind it, to try to get away.

“Some of them realized Jeffery was nowhere to be seen … . They went back to the porch and he was lying beside the steps.”

Parker said Collins was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center by South Robeson Rescue and then flown to UNC Hospitals, where he died on Sunday.

Parker said that investigators do not believe Collins was the “intended victim.”

He said that among the group at McDaniel Street Apartments was another man who was victimized by McNair on Oct. 16. McNair was also served with warrants charging him with armed robbery and car larceny in the October incident.

Parker said Devon Brown, 20, of 508 E. Ninth St., Lumberton, 20, was arrested about 3 a.m. Saturday at the Royal Inn in Lumberton and also charged with armed robbery and car larceny in the Oct. 16 incident. Brown was not implicated in Collins’ murder.

The State Bureau of Investigation, the Sheriff’s Office and Lumberton police with the investigation, according to Parker.

Let's not fool ourselves, while we have these incidents are occurring in low income areas there are more and more incidents occurring in affluent areas. We have an epidemic in America w our young people and because it only affected certain youth we kind of turned a deaf ear and blind eye. No one wants to see a ban on guns, but I don't see why assault weapons are needed in our society. People need to secure their weapons so they can't get into the hands of the JDs and Lanza's of the world. That's not race, economics. That's the truth. Guns get on the street because they arent secured properly.

SportsJunkie, You are saying he didn't post because the race of the newtown shooter. THe fact is is dont matter the race of the shooter. The fact is that this happened here at home is GANG related. check out the info about JD (the shooter) and he was connected to a gang and has been shooting at the intended target for a few weeks now. He dont deserve to have a jail to sit in and should be tried and then simply dealt with after the trial. And if people would stand up something would be said about that and they would be sitting in jail themselves. Newtown is totally different situation and dont understand why you bring race into it and bring newtwon up also. maybe you part of problem.

Well well.. well...... I agree tellit, I totally agree with everything you've stated.

I'm tired of those kind of folks,(sportsjunky) who look the other way when minorities commit crimes. It's as if they want it to continue. They know by us speaking up we can bring attention to the problem and start resolving it, but people like sportsjunky want the killing and poverty going on in the minority communities to continue. I believe they enjoy opening the newspaper and reading about a murder in the public housing complexes, for some sick twisted reason or another.......

Tellit, it's people like me and you who care, we want this to end.

Shame on you sportjunkie, you've been ousted and others have figured you out too.....

Ps. (Gomer Pyle face) Shame, shame.. shame.....

Tellit, I don't disagree with the comments posted about JD. I agree that criminals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. However, there is a slight difference between Newtown and our local crime (Economics & Race). I haven't seen articles saying we should do away with suburban neighborhoods or the white single parents should not take their mentally challenged child to a gun range. Repeatedly Ross come on here and makes it all about the lower income people of our county. This was not some random post, I have made that point on several occasions. I have even agreed with him on a few points. As Christians were are suppose to love thy neighbor, and our fellow man. The next time you post on here, why not ask what have I done to make my community better?

Ross you and tellit are one and the same. Neither of you can be educated, because you obviously can't comprehend. Show me one post of mine where I excuse or perpetuate crime of any type. I find it hard to believe they blocked any of you post Ross, with all the garbage you've posted. Now we have 3 Bigots instead of 2 on here. Dang

The county has 1 gang Detective... That isn't going to accomplish anything in this county. This county is in need of a Violent Crimes/Gang DIVISION to address this issue. Such a unit can concentrate on these subjects and conduct in depth investigations which may lead to federal violations and active/longer sentences. . . Instead of hitting them with minor crimes and they get low bonds , probation, or nothing happening at all.

Unbelievable. $40,000. And again I ask, WHO is the victim? And the answer is YOU AND I and EVERY TAXPAYER IN NC. For $40,000 you could buy a solid GOLD rope and solve the problem in style.

Some scumbag (spit) lawyer will get $140 dollars an hour to "defend" the thing, then it will get free room and board and veterinary care IF it gets put in The Big House, and THE TAXPAYERS of NC will PAY FOR IT ALL. Now who's the "victim". I say turn it loose and forget about it. Nature will take it's course.

Bout time they arrested JD. He has been a menace to this community for years. They need to go ahead and crack down on all those he runs with too. THey got to have something on all those guys. This is the reason we DO NOT NEED BAN ON GUNS. If JD had one then he would still have it if gun bans are in affect. He would still be able to do this type thing. Next thing is to see if Robeson County judges give him enough bond to keep him in jail. I was in court the other day when a boy from Lumberton High was there for drug and weapons on campus. They got rid of drug charge and gave him 5 days suspended sentence on weapon charge. THis was last Monday after all the shooting up north. Judges need to step up and make examples out of those that do such things and then maybe we can make them understand they not getting off light. Just like kid from lumberton with drugs and weapon. He should have heavy price to pay and should have to answer for drugs too. Who cares if jail is overcrowded or not. Let them live however they have to live if they did the crime. Put up tents like Arizona sheriff and just live with it.

We need to ban government housing complexes......

It's a fact those places cause murder. Those of you who disagree with me, dislike little children and young teens............ I care.

What needs to happen is the entire community and the surrounding area needs to acknowledge there is a serious problem with gun violence, and violent crimes in the area and actually make attempts to do something about it instead of sitting on their behind and not doing anything about the problems that plague the area . . . . . . . To the family friends and loved ones of Jeffery Collins, May GOD’s unchanging hand be with you during this holiday season and may GOD watch over your family my family’s prayers and thoughts are with you and yours!!!

Hey wade, we try but, everytime a proposal is put forth to deter crime, we're called racists, death penalty pushers, haters, or told we are insensitive and don't care about how some are raised or some other excuse for the criminals. We want to do so much about it, but then we'd be sitting in jail until we prove self defense.

So, that being said, all we have left to try and combat this epidemic is word of mouth, computors, and forums such as this to spread "our love"......

Ross, I waited to see if you would post your normal inflammatory anti-crime message about the senseless Newtown incident. I notice you did not post with your usual adjectives, or derogatory remarks! Was there a reason for that, other than the killer was a non-minority male? i see you wasted no time commenting about this incident!!!
