Robert Irenus Connell Sr., 85, of 896 S. Main St., died Oct. 31, 2012.
A service to celebrate the life of Connell will be 4 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, the Revs. Angela Pleasants, Mitch Murrow and Jerianne Pyles officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery in Mount Holly.
Connell was a loving Christian husband, father and grandfather. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Dr. Earl Ware Connell and Helen Eugene Lineberger Connell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Lou Craig Connell, and a sister Elizabeth Anne Browne.
He was a graduate from Mount Holly High School, Belmont Abbey College and Georgia Tech University. Upon graduation from Georgia Tech, he was an architectural engineer with Sinclair Refining Company. Connell was an architect and was involved in designing numerous commercial buildings in the Southeas,t including the Methodist Home in Charlotte and the Abbey Plaza sShopping Center in Belmont. He was a WWII US Navy veteran, where he served as a radarman second class.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as head teller. He was a member of the former Mount Holly Civitan Club and a member of the Boy Scouts of America from age 12 to 85. He was a scout master in Mount Holly and was a Silver Beaver recipient and Wood Badge Course director. He was a member of the Mount Holly VFW Post, where he has served as post commander for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Gaston and Mount Holly Historical Societies. He was an entrepreneur, starting his own business “Concraft” in 1976.
He is survived by four children, Linda C. Frazer and husband Hugh Thomas of Burgaw, Robert I. Connell Jr. “Rick” and wife Missy of Mount Holly, James L. Connell and wife Teresa of Mount Holly, and Julia C. Paul and husband Jeffrey of Lumberton; 10 grandchildren, Hugh T. Frazer Jr. and wife Nicole of Durham, Carrie D. Frazer and Robert C. Frazer, both of Wilmington, Robert W. Connell and wife Jessie, Leigh Anne Connell and Craig C. Connell, all of Mount Holly, James L. Connell Jr. of Charlotte, John M. Connell and wife Sarah of Cramerton, Doris K. Paul and Charles C. Paul, both of Lumberton; two great-granddaughters, Nola Jane Connell and Sadie Grace Connell.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall.
