Joel Layton Lewis, 71, of 10718 Shannon Road, entered the arms of Jesus on Nov. 13, 2012.
The celebration of life will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Boles Funeral Home, the Revs. Willie Scott, Dewayne Lowery and Hedrick Jones officiating. The funeral and interment will take place at a later date.
Brother Joel graduated Fairmont High School in 1959 and worked 23 years at J.P. Stevens before retiring in 1989. He attended Union Chapel Holiness Methodist Church for several years while he was able.
He was preceeded in death by his father, Layton Lewis; his mother, Nora Lee Jordan; stepfather, Claude Jordan; sisters, Erlene Lewis and Helen Lockey; and two brothers, Eugene Lewis and James Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Lewis of the home; a daughter, Vivian McNeill; a son-in-law, N.J. McNeill Jr; four brothers, Wilton G. “W.G.” Lewis of Red Springs, and Jimmy Lewis, Milton Lewis and Kenny Lewis, all of Shannon; a sister, Geraldine Starling of Fayetteville; and two granddaughters,Kennedy Grace McNeill and Madison Hope McNeill, all of Shannon. He will be forever remembered by a host of extended family members, fellow church members and many special friends.
The visitation will be at other times at his home or his daughter’s home in Shannon.
