St. Pauls

John Edward Odum, 87, of St. Pauls, died Dec 12, 2012, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Pauls First Baptist Church, the Rev. Pat Hash officiating. Burial will follow in Great Marsh Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was born in Greensboro on Jan. 19, 1925, to the late Rufus and Belle Odum.

A graduate of St. Pauls High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and during the Korean War he was an instructor at The Citadel in South Carolina. He retired as vice president of sales for NC Natural Gas Corporation after 27 years.

He enjoyed his five granddaughters, his beloved dog Lucy, fishing, playing his guitar and, of course, “Raby”.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie O. Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Raby Odum; his sons, John Edward Odum Jr. of St. Pauls and Darrell H. Odum of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Faye Odum McMillian of St. Marys, Ga.; his grandchildren, Amanda L. Odum of Raleigh, Shawna Meyer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sarah McMillian Aitkin of Japan, Laura McMillan Stephens and Kelly Warren, both of St. Marys; and four great-grandchildren.

The visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McNeill Mackie Funeral Home in St. Pauls.
