Rowland

James Albert (Hoss) Deese, 88, of Rowland, died Dec. 17, 2012, at home.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hamer Church of God, Hamer S.C., the Revs. Joey Nelms and Robert Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery.

Hoss was born Dec. 2, 1925, he was a lifelong resident of Robeson County, and a veteran of World War II a prosperous farmer who loved the land and was known for his quick wit.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruby W. Deese; his mother, Zoe (Pitt) Deese; his grandparents, Susie and Thomas Deese; a sister, Pearlie Moore; a son, Wilson Deese; a daughter, Louise Edwards; and two grandchildren, Joshua Deese and Krista Deese.

He is survived by his sister, Maggie Oxendine of Charlotte; four sons, Earl T. Deese (Mae), Ronnie Deese (Rogena), Bobby Deese (Theresa), Jerry Hunt (Debra), all of Rowland; four daughters, Carolyn Strickland (Braxton) Sara Lois Walters, both of Rowland, and Linda Joyce Hunt (Horace) and Susan Deese (Brien), both of Charlotte; two grandchildren reared in the home, Sharon Renee Deese of Rowland, and Bobby Edwards of Bennettsville S.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hamer Church of God, Hamer S.C., and at other times the family will receive friends at the home of 7240 Kitchen St. Road, Rowland, N.C.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to two special caregivers, Jan Oxendine and Lena Scott.
