Furman Swett

MEMPHIS — Furman (Terry) S. Swett, 90, of Memphis, Tenn., passed away at Applingwood Health Care Center on Dec. 30, 2012.

A memorial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Unity Church. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

He was born in Fairmont, N.C., and served in the U.S. Army in WWII. He was a retired sales manager from Lenkurt Electric C.o (Verizon), having worked in Chicago, Atlanta, San Carlos, Calif., and Durham, N.C. He moved to Memphis in 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Bertha Strickland Swett, both of Pembroke, N.C., his brothers, Lt. James Swett and Tommy D. Swett; and an infant sister, Vergie Swett.

He is survived by his wife Gladys of 66 years; a daughter, Sharilynn (David) Hunt of Bartlett, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Shelley (Jerry) Copeland and Aaron (Kristi) Hunt; and great-grandchildren, Daniel, Hayden, Graham and Hannah, all of Memphis. He is also survived by the Revs., Vardell Swett of Boca Raton, Fla., Purnell Swett and Bruce Swett (Peggy), all of Pembroke, N.C.; his sister, Dorothy (Roy) Blakely of St. Peters, Mo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at First Unity Church.
