SYLVIA EVANS

SMITHFIELD — Sylvia Odom Evans, 82, of Smithfield, died March 3, 2013, in Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park.

She was born July 28, 1930, in Robeson County to the late Bennett Monroe and Margaret Stone Odom.

She was the widow of Joseph David Evans and was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Brown.

Sylvia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Smithfield, where she taught Sunday school over the radio for more than 30 years, directed the children’s choir and worked with the GA’s.

Evans is survived by two sons, Joe Evans Jr. and wife Janice of Princeton, and Ben Evans and wife Mei Siu of Pine Level; two daughters, Ashley Evans of Garner, and Nell Evans of Smithfield; a brother, Edsel Odom of Wilmington; her sister, Gilda Plummer of Fayetteville; and seven grandchildren, Sarah, Katie, Josh, Megan, Nicole, Johanna and Olivia.

The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 209, Smithfield, N.C., 27577.
