LUMBERTON — City police are investigating a Sunday shooting that left an 18-year-old Lumberton man in critical condition.
Officers responded about 7:07 p.m. to a report of a person shot at the Marathon Store located at 1302 N. Roberts Ave., according to the Lumberton Police Department. Treyvon Mitchell, of Holly Street, was found lying on the parking lot suffering from gunshot wound.
Mitchell was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center for treatment, and later to another hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to the police department.
Investigators are working to identify two people believed to have assaulted Mitchell before the shooting, according to the police department. Both suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.
Mitchell can be seen on surveillance footage arriving at the store on Sunday evening with two other men, according to Marathon employees, who did not wish to give their names. Mitchell went into the store twice to retrieve water for the overheated passenger vehicle. The second time he returned to the vehicle, the men beat Mitchell before they shot him.
Anyone with information about the shooting should contact Detective Evan Whitley at the Lumberton Police Department by calling 910-671-3845.
