MARIETTA — A Fairmont woman was struck by a vehicle and killed Friday while riding her bicycle, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Sally Campbell Edwards, 44, was riding her bicycle north on N.C. 41 near Marietta Road when she was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by 63-year-old William Lynn Floyd, according to a report filed by Trooper R.M. Hunt. The accident occurred at about 8:11 p.m.
Edwards lived on Marietta Road.
According to the report, Edwards had been riding in the center lane and was wearing no reflective or protective gear when she was struck. No charges will be filed.
“At night time you have to have reflective clothing or some type of lamp on your vehicle,” said 1st Sgt. Jeremy Brewington of the Highway Patrol.
Floyd, who lives on Lake View Road in Fairmont, was not injured.
North Carolina traffic laws require bicyclists to ride in the same direction as traffic on the right side of the road; use hand signals to indicate movements; wear a helmet if under 16; and equip their bicycles with a front lamp visible from 300 feet and a rear reflector visible from 200 feet.
