Man shoots self in front of police

RED SPRINGS — Red Springs police on Tuesday morning received a call no officer wants to get — a man saying he was planning to take his own life.

As of Wednesday morning, Henry Steven Wilson was alive but listed in critical condition at a hospital, according to Police Chief Ronnie Patterson.

According to Patterson, Red Springs officers were getting ready to attend a funeral when the call came into dispatch. Officers arrived at Wilson’s home on North Edinborough Street and tried to speak with him before he walked behind the house and fired the gun.

“It’s been pretty tough on me and the guys here,” said Patterson, who knows Wilson. “… It has taken a toll on them. We want to debrief and talk about it.”

The Robesonian’s policy is typically to not report suicides or attempted suicides. But because of the public nature of this event, The Robesonian felt compelled to do so.
