LUMBERTON — A man who drowning Saturday at Luther Britt Park has been identified as 22-year-old Nathan Jenkins.

Jenkins was swimming with a group of friends at the park when he disappeared, according to Roger Taylor, commander of Lumberton Rescue and Emergency Medical Services. The 911 call was made around 1:05 p.m. and rescue personnel arrived within minutes.

Taylor and two city firemen were among those who entered the water and found Jenkins in 12 feet of water.

Jenkins was pulled to shore and CPR and advanced life support measures were administered for 10 to 15 minutes. He was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Taylor said there are lifeguards patrolling the swimming area, but he did not know how many were on duty at the time of the drowning.

The park is part of the Lumberton Recreation Department. Tim Taylor, the director of the Recreation Department, and Leon Maynor, a member of the Lumberton City Council who represents District 7, which includes the park, were among those at the scene.

The last person to drown at Luther Britt Park, according to The Robesonian’s archives, was an 18-year-old in June 2010.
