DURHAM (AP) — A Superior Court judge has sentenced a man to at least 36 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the 2005 shooting deaths of four men at a Durham town house.

Local media outlets report 36-year-old Roderick Duncan was initially charged with first-degree murder in 2006. On Tuesday, Duncan pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder, which allowed him to avoid a possible death sentence or life in prison. He received credit for the 592 days he’s already been in prison.

Authorities say the four men were shot in the head in November 2005, and their faces were so badly disfigured that one of them could only be identified by a tattoo. Another man was wounded, and a sixth man jumped from a second-floor window to escape.
