LUMBERTON — Southeastern Community & Family Services Inc. has elected Bernest L. Hewett board chairman, the nonprofit announced recently.

Hewett replaces Davian Ellison and will serve a one-year term as chairman.

Southeastern Community & Family Services, Inc., based in Lumberton, has served low income residents in seven neighboring counties for 51 years. The agency operates 15 Head Start Centers, Section 8 housing in Scotland County and the Community Services Block Grant Program.

“I really believe that it is our responsibility to help shape the lives of young people as they begin life,” Hewett said in a statement. “I also believe that this organization has one of the most impressive records of starting children off young and preparing them for a good start in life, school, and communicating with other people.”

In addition to Hewett, new board officers include: Felicia Watkins, vice chairperson; Cynthia Demery, treasurer; and Scott Witten, secretary.

In 1991, Hewett retired from the Waste Industries. He was then elected president of the Brunswick County Branch of the NAACP, serving as president for 10 years. He has also served on the advisory board of Brunswick County Schools, Brunswick County Branch of the Black Caucus and the Democratic Headquarters Board.
