FAIRMONT — An unknown amount of untreated wastewater spilled from a main sewer line in Fairmont as a result of Hurricane Matthew, according to a notice from the town.

The discharge, on N.C. 130 between Powell Street and Industrial Drive, washed out sewer pipes at a bridge on Old Stage Road and at a bridge on Morro Street. The problem was discovered Friday.

According to the town, the untreated wastewater was discharged into the Pittman Mill Branch in the Lumber River Basin. The Division of Water Resources was notified and is reviewing the matter.
