FORT BRAGG (AP) — The Army is investigating the death of a Fort Bragg soldier in Africa.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (bit.ly/2eOMmPQ) Thursday that 33-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Zachary Allan Bannister was found dead Oct. 17 in Kenya.

Officials say Bannister was in Kenya with his Special Forces team for training. There is no word on the cause of death.

Family members said Bannister lived in Sanford but was a native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

He was a member of the 3rd Special Force Group’s 2nd Battalion.

He had served first in the Marine Corps as an aircraft rescue firefighter before pursuing a career as an Army Green Beret at age 26.

Family members say he had served two previous deployments to Afghanistan. He earned three Bronze Star medals and other unit and personal decorations.
