KINSTON (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory has a date set for the North Carolina legislature to return to Raleigh to consider a Hurricane Matthew relief package.

McCrory said Friday he’ll call a special session for Dec. 13. He made the announcement while in Kinston attending his hurricane recovery committee’s fifth and final public hearing.

The Republican governor said in early November that he was aiming for a special session the following month and said earlier this week that he was still looking at the second week in December.

State officials estimate the October storm and historic flooding may have caused $2 billion in economic damage. Robeson County and its county seat, Lumberton, were among the hardest hit areas.

The governor hasn’t yet disclosed his request to legislators, who have $1.6 billion in reserves to pay for it. McCrory also has asked Congress for additional aid.
