FAIRMONT — Devin Smith, a native of Fairmont, was recently named a 2016 Gates Millennium Scholar.

Smith, the son of Kevin and Cynthia Smith, recently graduated from South Robeson High School.

Smith plans to attend East Carolina University to pursue a degree in physical therapy. The scholarship will cover his education for four years and beyond. He must pursue an undergraduate degree in either computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science, but he can pursue a master or doctorate degree in any field.

“I’ve always tried my best to take advantage of any opportunity that comes my way,” Smith said. “I’ve had the support of my family and some awesome teachers to help guide me along the way. Receiving this scholarship has been a game changer for me.”

At South Robeson, Smith played variety baseball and basketball and participated in cross country. He was active in the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Beta Club, Native American Student Organization, College Ambassadors, History Club and AISES, of which he was the president.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program recently announced its final 1,000 recipients. The program will not continue after to induct new classes after 2016.
