To the Editor,

The Robeson County Humane Society is grateful for the outpouring of community support for our recent supply drive, which was held at Lowes Foods in Lumberton on Sep. 24. We received approximately 100 gallons of bleach, over 300 pounds of cat litter, paper towels, and laundry and dish detergent, all of which totaled up to an in-kind donation of $1,016. We also received $112 in cash donations at our table.

Because of this generosity we are able to use this money to pay for vet care for our shelter residents, along with other operating expenses. We thank Lowes Food manager Rocky Williamson and his staff for organizing and assisting in this supply drive. We deeply appreciate all the publicity The Robesonian gave to this effort, including several articles and an editorial.

We care for approximately 125 cats and 175 dogs annually in our facility at 3180 W. Fifth St in Lumberton. The RCHS vaccinates, deworms and sterilizes each resident before they are placed in permanent homes. We care for them in our shelter for as long as it takes to find just the right family for them. In the nearly 10 years this shelter has been open, we have helped thousands of animals that would have otherwise been put down at the county animal control facility.

The RCHS also supports a spay/neuter program for low income county residents, where an owner can have their pet sterilized with a copay of $20 for a cat and $25 for a dog. This program has been in operation since 2004, and during that time we have assisted in having more than 4,500 county animals sterilized.

We welcome new members and volunteers to help us care for our shelter residents, and to help with other community efforts. Our next community outreach event will be our annual “Bark at the Moon” fundraiser on Oct. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at our Friends for Life Shelter. Please come by for our social hour and see the improved shelter of which we are very proud.
