Fairmont advances, Red Springs falls in volleyball playoffs

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont and Red Springs volleyball teams began their quest for an NCHSAA 2A state volleyball championship on Wednesday, but only the Golden Tornadoes kept those hopes alive.

Hosting Hertford County, Fairmont earned a four-set victory over the Bears to advance to Thursday’s second round at South Lenoir. The Golden Tornadoes won the first set, 25-22, lost 29-27 and reeled off a pair of wins, 25-15 and 25-13, to claim the match.

Kirshay Moore paced Fairmont with 19 assists. Brittany Hunt tallied 17 service points and eight aces, with MacKenzie Johnson adding 15 digs and Maya Bellamy contributing 11 kills.

The Red Devils lost in four sets at Farmville Central, evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 win in the second set, before losing back-to-back sets to drop the match.

Kelsey Locklear tallied 17 assists for Red Springs, with Kyria Locklear adding 10 digs and Sanastasia Powell contributing nine kills and a pair of blocks.
