Cumberland County dominates Highlander Cup

RAEFORD — With last year’s loss in mind, Cumberland County claimed a dominating 9-2 win over Robeson County in the annual Highlander Cup golf tournament on Sunday at Bayonet.

Andy Andrews and Phillip Wallwork were the only golfers to earn a full point for Robeson, winning their best-ball match. Joseph Martin and Jeff Broadwell halved their best-ball match and Dyrck Fanning picked up the last 1/2 point in his single match.

Cumberland has claimed two of the last three tournaments at Bayonet.

Red Springs wins, St. Pauls, Lumberton ousted in state soccer playoffs

LUMBERTON — The Red Springs boys soccer team was the lone winner from the county over the weekend in the NCHSAA state playoffs, earning a 1-0 win over Northeastern to advance to the second round.

The Red Devils will travel to No. 4 Washington this afternoon. In other 2A action, St. Pauls dropped a 9-0 contest at East Duplin. In 4A, Lumberton lost 3-0 at Millbrook.

Red Devils hosting basketball jamboree

RED SPRINGS — Red Springs will play host to a preseason basketball jamboree on Wednesday, featuring Lumberton and Purnell Swett.

Admission is $3 and the event starts at 4:30 p.m. with the Lady Devils facing the Lady Rams. The Red Springs boys will follow with scrimmages against the Pirates and Southern Lee.
