Crichlow admitted to American College of Surgeons

LUMBERTON — Dr. Lya Crichlow, of Southeastern Health’s Southeastern Surgical Center, was among 1,679 initiates from around the world to become Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.

This year’s class was among the largest ever admitted into the college during a convocation ceremony at its 2015 annual Clinical Congress in Chicago, Illinois, in October.

Crichlow received a medical doctorate in 2005 from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her surgical residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 2010. In addition, she completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Tulane University in New Orleans, Lousiana, in 2011. In 2013, Crichlow attained board certification from the American Board of Surgery. She has a strong professional interest in robotic surgery, minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic colorectal surgery, repair of abdominal wall hernias and other general surgical procedures.

An applicant for the fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school; must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the college; must possess certification by an American surgical specialty board or appropriate certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and must have been in practice for at least one year. Before admission into the fellowship, the surgeon must further demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.
