LUMBERTON — The arrival of summer means a new slate of superhero movies at the multiplex.
Comic book-inspired films heading to theaters over the next few months include “Captain America: Civil War,” “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Suicide Squad,” “Gambit” and “Doctor Strange.” They follow in the footsteps of “Deadpool” and “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” two box office hits released earlier this year.
Fans can see where the characters got their start during the sixth annual Comic Book, Sports Card and Toy Show, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at Biggs Park Mall.
The biannual convention is billed as the largest of its kind in Southeastern North Carolina. Collectors can bring their vintage funny books and other items to the event for free appraisals.
V.L Jennings, a science fiction novelist from Dillon, South Carolina, will be on hand to autograph books. Other guests will include Skye Hedges, an author, and William Parker, a comic book artist.
The event will also include an appearance from Iron Man, the metal suit-wearing superhero from Marvel Comics fame. He will pose for photos with fans from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Fans have another opportunity to catch Iron Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” which hits the Town and Country 4 theater in Lumberton this weekend.
The Comic Book, Sports Card and Toy Show is free to attend. For information, call 910-316-7251 or email mchaud1@gmail.com.
