LUMBERTON — A church in Red Springs broke ground during a special ceremony on Sunday.
Pilgrim Grove One Accord Worldwide Church of God Inc., located at 116 Grantham St. in Red Springs, broke ground as community leaders watched.
The ceremony started with the traditional hymn “Amazing Grace” and a blessing from Deacon Lee Galbreath before moving on to the ground-breaking.
Pastor M.A. Wesley welcomed special guests to the ceremony, including Raymond Cummings, county commissioner; Red Springs town Commissioners Shirley McBride and Edward Henderson; and John McNeill, mayor of Red Springs.
“I’m so impressed with what you as a church and congregation have done,” McNeill said. “How you’ve taken the area and cleaned it up. The town is trying to get our neighborhoods cleaned up, but here at Pilgrim Grove, you all took the lead. We, the town of Red Springs, are just trying to catch up. God bless your pastor and this congregation.”
After the ground-breaking, church members came together for a bake sale followed by a food distribution to needy families. Each family received soup courtesy of the Campbell Soup Company.
